On Thursday, May 13, 2010, Rep. Judy Chu, D-CA32, spoke on the House floor about her amendment to the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act (H.R. 5116). Rep. Chu's amendment would help minority students transition from 2-year to 4-year institutions and earn degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Minority students are currently underrepresented in STEM fields, despite the fact that they are slated to make up over half of the U.S. college age population by 2050. The Congresswoman's amendment would ensure that America retains a competitive edge in these important fields.
