Prof. Oxana Shevel: "I'm here today to draw some parallels between the events we are observing in the Middle East today and Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and, more recently, the 2000s. I claim no expertise in the Middle East, but I will highlight some of the factors that scholars of Eastern Europe have identified when explaining both the collapse of the authoritatian regimes—why some regimes collapse and why some might not—and also what would happen afterwards—which countries end up being democracies and which might not."
