Hmmm. I bet it's an actual pick-up. I mean, look at the album cover. Heh. Not to mention, he wrote a giant double album all about (sort of) one state. He's probably pulling from both spiritual and mundane (and spiritual/mundane) experiences. :)

My take on the song is that by "Pick Up" he doesn't mean a truck, but a spiritual experience.
