JONAS BAES: PATANGIS-BUWAYA [Kuala Lumpur Performance]

JONAS BAES: PATANGIS-BUWAYA [...and the crocodile weeps....] for four wind instruments from any culture, composed by Jonas Baes in 2003 at an internal refugee camp in the Philippines. This version for 2 Chinese Bamboo Flutes [Dizi], 1 Oboe and 1 Clarinet and 150 bamboo bird whistles played by the audience, is rendered by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (William Lane, Director), with Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe, guest Dizi player. Performed at the 1st Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival in Malaysia on November 28, 2009.

This fantastic performance by the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and a very responsive audience is one I will never forget! Integrated into the end of the music, bamboo bird whistles were given out to the audience for them to play, and in effect create a dense "forest of sounds". As this was the last number of that concert, the audience had to be taken immediately into buses that were to take them to the next concert venue that very same evening. Still energized perhaps by the PATANGIS-BUWAYA, and even while in the bus (and even during certain moments in the next concert!) people would blow the bird whistles, first in trickles tehn in a mass of sounds during the next concert, as if [unknowingly] extending the venue of the first concert outside the hall, into the buses and into the next concert venue. In the process, the boundaries of the original performance space has been expanded, a phenomenon I marvel at to this day...
