The advantage of this is the capability of seeing the 'whole' out of many detailed photos.

What? No, there is no extra detail, they are just digital photos! Have you never before seen an ordinary image viewer before?
Most of the time you're ohhh/ahhhing about - photosynth is just navigating digital images like any image viewer does, zooming in and out, panning around.
The amazing thing is how it arranges and navigates the image collection when you're just browsing from a distance.
