STORY:
Angry anti-government protests turned violent on the streets of Madagascar's capital.

Police say at least 44 people have been killed since the trouble started.

The demonstrations have brought Antananarivo to a standstill, with many businesses staying shut.

Investigators say many of the dead are suspected looters.

Leading the protests is Antananarivo's mayor Andry Rajoelina.

He is accusing President Marc Ravalomanana of failing the poor and of dirty politics.

These are the worst scenes of civil unrest that the island has seen in many years.

The fiery protests are denting Madagascar's image as a popular destination for tourists and for foreign investment in its mining and oil industries.

  • the millions of acres lease deal is ridiculous ... seems like nobody there really cares

  • this will be UK and USA by the end of next year

    it begins.

  • Yeah, this isn't the Pixar place, b/c Pixar has as much a clue about M'scar as the news outlets. To start, this otherwise peaceful place is being ripped apart because the transnational investment agreements w/ the M'scar gov. are incredibly destructive and aim for few to profit. Consider that S. Korea is about to lease half of ALL of M'scar's arable land for 99yrs. for its own country's food supply. press is no longer free in M'scar; food prices are soaring....What else but take to the streets?!

  • foreign investment ? to enrich you and Madagascar government leaders not the Madagascar people ? to give a poor salary for Malagasy workers ? They love their country like you love yours, so If you think really to develop Madagascar people and your company, you're welcome but respect them like you respect your people country, else go away

  • i dont get it wheres all the cute funny talking animals
