That's certainly true, Steve. And yet, our society makes those judgments on a broader basis. Like parents telling their children what's productive, or not. That was the perspective from which I was approaching the question.

I'd like to watch this entire video but it seems like it would be a waste of time... you should know...

i now watch YouTube like you might watch TV. It's more varied, in smaller easier to consume chunks, and its made by your friends. If you watch the same people over and over you build up some sort of relationship with them (like we all have our favourit movie stars) as the different characters interact it's like some cool giant web of entertainment.

Sorry Tom, the 500 character limit got to my comment, before I could say thank you for posting such thought provoking vlogs. They are Fabulous!

Enjoyable's plenty!
I think that it depends on how you use YouTube. It could be a huge waste of time if all you are doing is watching a bunch of comedians all day. But, isn't all form of Entertainment a waste of time if you think about it? There's nearly always something better to do.
Personally, I find that I gain a lot of knowledge from YouTube, but that may be because I use it more to communicate with others, listen to opions and well as voice my own.

Thanks. You know, when I made this video, in September of '06, I certainly didn't know what YT was going to become. Listening to it 14 months later, it's pretty funny. Clearly YT's a waste of time! AND it's a great window into other people's lives, and into our own.

Whether for pure mindless entertainment, creative stimulation or simply to hear opinions from people we wouldn't have access to listen to otherwise,
I would say, No Way. So even when it may appear to be a waste of time in certain instances,if it sparks us in some way creatively or emotionally, then, well, no. So maybe the alternative question is, "Is You Tube a necessity or a luxury?"

Mindless entertainment, creative stim, diverse source of opinion, giving creative/emotional sparks: sounds like TV, doesn't it? Which makes your alternative framing of the quesion interesting: necessity or luxury? Where does TV fit in that? Thanks.
