This was a very radical song for the era. More typical were songs where a girl would do anything to be so-and-so's girl. You had to finish high school, get married and have kids. Thereafter you were "Mrs. Whoever" and had no individual identity of your own. It scared me, I didn't want to lose myself forever; even though that is what I was expected to want with all my heart. This was an incredibly empowering song to a 13 year old who had yet to find out that she had been born to be a hippy.

This song may well have been the beginning of the Women's Movement. Very powerful. I just saw her sing it live a few days ago in Palm Springs. She was GREAT.

I checked the Palm Springs Follies site, and you are quite correct; she'll be performing during this week! (week of May 12, 2013) Amazing.

This is fantastic! It's a song of freedom. It's so inspiring that I just about come unglued when I hear it. I just watched the 1994 version of her doing the song; IMO, this version has more passion. I put a link to it today in a news story comments thread at NBC News; it was very relevant.

Can't Sing? Lesley had 19 chart singles, seven original Mercury albums plus two Golden Hits albums from 1963-1968. You Don't Own Me reached #2 on the Billboard's Hot 100 in February 1964, only to be kept out of the #1 spot by the Beatles! She held her own on the charts during the British Invasion. She's still out there today performing live to sell-out crowds. Currently at the Palm Springs Follies, second year in a row. Released a great album in 2005, EVER SINCE. The lady can sing!
