Yellowstone Hot Spring Microbial Mats as Natural Models for Systems Microbiology and Biofuel Development presented by David Ward, Professor, Microbial Ecology, Montana State University. Dr. Ward describes cyanobacterial mats inhabiting hot springs in Yellowstone National Park as model systems from which to learn principles of microbial community ecology. Advances in molecular and microsensor technologies have culminated in a solid understanding of the composition and structure of this community.
Presented at the October 9, 2009 symposium Microbial Communities: Stewards of the Universe.
