Dr. Bela Kudish discusses Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is uncontrollable leaking of urine from the bladder. It becomes more common as people age and is more than twice as likely to occur in women.

Symptoms

The main symptom of incontinence is the unplanned release of urine. Different types of incontinence may affect when and how urine is released.

Stress incontinence, which is the most common bladder control problem in younger women, can cause someone to leak urine when they laugh, cough, sneeze, jog or lift heavy objects.

Overactive bladder is characterized by a woman having one or both of the following bladder control problems:
-Urge urinary incontinence, a sudden and desperate need to urinate followed by leaking urine.
-Feeling a strong need to urinate or urinating frequently, yet able to hold the urine until the restroom is reached.

Women may have a combination of stress incontinence and overactive bladder, which is called mixed urinary incontinence.

Causes & Triggers

The causes and triggers of incontinence include:

- Weakened muscles and tissue that support the bladder
- Spasms in the bladder muscles
- Medications, including high blood pressure prescriptions
- Caffeinated and decaffeinated tea, coffee and sodas
- Chocolate
- Hearing the sound of running water

Treatments

Treatment for urinary incontinence includes pelvic exercises to strengthen weak pelvic muscles, medication and corrective surgery. The specialists at Winnie Palmer Hospital can assist you in finding the best treatment for your individual needs, or in learning ways to prevent incontinence from occurring.
