The word homosexual means someone who has a sexual preference for the same sex.

Here are some definitions...
Homo - same
Sexual - With respect to sexuality
Gay - To be homosexual

In modern day english homosexual and gay have the same meaning, and that meaning is to sexually prefer those of the same sex.

I know the definition what I was trying to say is that people never use the term he is openly homosexual, but stead they say he is openly gay. I know gay and homosexual are the same thing.
