This is the same motor with the spark plug back in the number one hole. Notice the noise? What the hell is that? It has always been there when I went in to adjust the valves. Could it be a bad seat on a valve? Broken valve? Some terrible overlap in the cam? Car runs very good and strong even with the noise. Full roller motor. Triple valve springs, .742 lift.

  • It was actually a small hole in the piston. Too much material removed on the backside from balancing....came too close to the clearancing for the valve.

Probably got punched through on the dyno back in 1998.

  • It turns out the noise is the compression from the number one cylinder going through a hole in the piston. The noise has been there since the motor was put together. Too much material was removed from the underside of the piston during balancing/valve clearancing. It was almost 14:1 compression, so it probably popped through the less than 1/32 thick piston surface on the first firing.

  • With that kind of compression I guess you can afford to lose some, I glad you figured it out..

  • You have a SLIGHTLY bent #1 intake valve
