We all know and love the stirring Laurie Johnson theme, but on the show's first series starring Ian Hendry and stalwart Patrick MacNee, Dankworth's theme kicked off the action

  • Oops, P.S. - was I wrong in saying this Columbia version was used in the Honor Blackman series? - or was it only in the Ian Hendry one?

  • @SponDooley Good point - does anyone out there know?

  • @Sids60sSounds This was used in the Ian Hendry series, and Series 1 of the Honor Blackman series (1962). In 1963-64, a different version of this theme was used.

  • @catfan Nice one, catfan! - thanks

  • @Jantv81 - Producer/ Writer Brian Clemens did ask Dankwork to work on the film series but he was too busy to score every episode, so they brought in Laurie Johnson and it just made sense to change the theme to go with his style of incidental music.

  • @Sids60sSounds - The series 3 (63-64) version was called The Fontana Version. It's on the Let's Slip Away CD of Dankworth music. It's got a more urgent xylophone/metallic percussion rhythm added.

  • Why did the show switch composers? Was it just to differentiate the Emma Peel from Cathy Gales? I don't get it. Either way, they're both good.

  • Hey Sid, thanks so much for uploading this Columbia version for us all. I've owned the Fontana 45 since the mid-Sixties, and have always thought it was the one used in the Honor Blackman series, but now realise how wrong I've been all these years.

Your record's in good nick, well done matey, for looking after it so well. ATB.

  • Met MacNee at a book signing for his autobiography BLIND IN ONE EAR. Charming guy, and a pretty big one, at that. Hilarious and sad stories of his mother's leaving his father and taking him along to his mom's lesbian lover, who made him wear kilts!
