  • Holy mother of god that sounds friggin awsom!

  • This is the prototype engine...it's constructed from four 1000cc Yamaha superbike engines on a custom block. There are 5 valves per cylinder and it makes 540bhp @10,000rpm.

That's what I'm guessing. The big deals would be the camshafts and the oiling system, not to mention the crankshaft. I would hope the R1 doesn't use non-symmetric rods. A person can use the stock fuel and ignition electronics by solving for the angles of each cylinder. If the R1 uses common rail injection, that would simplify things a lot. It's do-able if you MATLAB like I do.

Before you jump to conclusions like those... consider the fact that they have constraints. Designing a block for an engine like this isn't easy, and deciding how you're going to build your crankshaft demands serious math. They have to take a lot into account. It's not as simple as you're putting it, and the odd firing crossplane R1 is a nightmare to tune exhaust-wise. Point is, they probably know more than us and they surely have their reasons.

I just think they should have thought about the sound the thing would make before they actually made it. Look at the diffrence between the '05 R1 and the '09 R1. This thing would have howled so much with a cross plane. It would be better than the BRM since it's a 4 liter instead of a 1.5. Now, it's a cross betwen a Honda and a Ferrari. It's like mixing Johnnie Walker Blue Label with a Coke.

I read my comment again and maybe I was a bit harsh by calling it junk. I wouldn't mind having a high quality recording of it so I can hear how dynamic the sound actually is. I would say the note is somewhere between Ferrari and Honda. The sound is crisp, but it's like trying to play the "C" chord on a piano by hitting c, E# and A. I mean, geese. Everybody gets a V8 because of the sound, otherwise turbo 4 cylinders would be held in higher esteem.

I want to agree with you, and I would agree with you, simply because you make sense and I can tell that you know your way around engines... but you have to take into account that the audio is highly compressed. We need a high quality video.

  • I think it sounds like giant piece of junk. They should have used a cross-plane crankshaft for each pair of banks, and coupled them out of phase so it growls like the BRM did. I love the stock sound of the R1, and the sound of the hartley v8, but this sounds terrible.

  • Great sound and engine... shame only for that vacuum cleaner name

  • @identiticrisis .. well.. no.. its like 8 liters.... i see your point

  • @xmodrock Is your big-block a four litre? Apples and oranges...

@MotoflashRo This looks and sounds superb, but it sounds like it's got flatplane cranks - does it vibrate much? :D
