The Durium Orchestra (Arthur Lally cl as bars dir, Max Goldberg tp, Arthur Niblo tp, Tony Thorpe tp, Peter Rush cl as v, Eric Linden ts, Ernest Wilson p, Bert Hadley banj g, Dave Asford b, Maurice Zafer dm, v. Sam Browne) - Too Many Tears. When Yuba Plays a Rumba on the Tuba, Durium 1932
--------------------------------Durium Records was a United Kingdom-based record label, who sold their cardboard single-sided records from c. 1930 to 1933. Its product and marketing were similar to that of the United States record company "Hit of the Week". During the darkest days of the Great Depression a few people could afford such luxuries as phonograph records. Therefore the records - which in the US sold for 15 cents - were made not of shellac, as was usual for gramophone record of the era, but of a patented blend of paper and resin called „durium". They were distributed through the departament stores and newsstands, featuring the most popular tunes of the day. Durium records were exported to other European countries, including Germany, France, Sweden and Denmark.

  • The story goes that the recording sessions were so casual that pranks and jokes were the norm.On too many tears the musicians try to throw Sam Browne off course by speeding up the playing leaving Browne breathless trying to catch up.You can hear the increase in tempo with Browne laughing whilst singing as he tries to keep up

  • He sings this so well, and Too Many Tears is a tricky song: chromatic melody and awkward intervals, but his pitching is really clean and accurate, and a lovely head voice. Thanks for posting it!

  • First time I've seen a Durium phonograph. The 1st song is great.I have to tell Bigband78 about this.

  • SUPERB!!

  • In the middle of the sleepless (occassional) night - this "two-fer" is a sheer delight.

I remember plaing Paul Anka's "Diana" like a million times in the summer of 1962 - from the record - Post Card. Thanks for the memories. Now I will sleep - dreaming of this charming tune - the lyrics "dupa - dupa -dupa down in Cuba"

  • Wonderful illustrations with this fabulous HOW record! It sounds like new.

  • Amazing how good the HOW's sound - if you can find them in good shape.

  • Both Awesome tunes.

  • Great songs! Too Many Tears (1932) Al Dubin/ Harry Warren; When Yuba Plays the Rumba on His Tuba(1931) Herman Hupfeld

  • Delightful! Especially Yuba's Rhumba on the Tuba. How did you fit that whole band into your gramophone? And is it still possible to make a durium record?
