Senator Tom Harkin today chaired the second in a series of hearing examining the shrinking middle class in America as Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee. The hearing, entitled "Stories from the Kitchen Table: How Middle Class Families are Struggling to Make Ends Meet" brought Iowan Amanda Greubel, a mother from DeWitt, Iowa to Washington to tell her story. Earlier this week, Harkin staff launched a 99 county summer tour to collect more stories from Iowa's middle class.

  • Do you really think they give a shit well they don't!!

  • Absolutely on target! As Amanda said, "They did everything they believed they should do to make a living and they are barely scraping by." What's life like for folks who make less?

No legislator should get a raise. In fact, they should be paid LESS! They need to take a cut in pay and a cut in benefits!

  • great speech.
