  • oh, the delay in opening the light rail (1996 - 2009) is unfortunately similar to the sort of delays we have here in Britain too.

Although the politicians will cry foul at my comments the reality is that our govt. actively dislikes good public transport - because taxes on motoring (especially fuels) are so high that they would have to increase other taxes (eg: income tax?) if too many people stopped buying liquid fuels.

  • The Victoria Line in London is also closed at certain times for testing of new trains. Its not just a Seattle thing! Anyway, from what I remember your tunnel never did open on Sundays.

As for the buses and the fumes, well, remember this, diesel fumes are said to be carcinogenic (cause cancer). Maybe a good legal team need to take action on the basis that using the hybrids in the tunnels is dangerous for human health.

  • I checked with Sound Transit on the bus fumes, and apparently the busses are 100% electric in the tunnel - the engine crankshaft is rotated by an electric motor to keep the hydraulic systems working, but no fuel is burned. All you get is hot air as exhaust, since the pistons are moving, and therefore sucking air into the engine. So, totally safe.

  • The tunnel is open on weekends now, and from what I remember of my visits to Seattle, the sign at University Street Station is fixed. Its worth noting that the tunnel is owned and operated by King County Metro, not Sound Transit.

As for the busses, they run in hush-hybrid mode when in the tunnel, using electric batteries for locomotion, with the diesel engines running at reduced power. The ventilation is good, though - never smelled anything odd at all.

  • Damn bureaucracy keeping is from our trains.

If it had started being built in 1996 like it should have, we'd have a very nice system by now.

  • I remember that when the buses enter the tunnel they switch over to a hybrid engine. Personally I really like the progress they've done. It's about time we have a light rail.

  • You need to post the updat of the closer of it, in less than 90 days of it's reopening.
