The lines going uphill are called TREADLE. Just before this spot there is a timed track section which calculates the speed of the train - bascially checking whether brakes are working. If the train reached the spot before the pre-defined times, the track switches to the uphill section and the train would come to a stop as it cannot negotiate the gradient and thus avoid an accident by not hurtling down the hill at uncontrolled speeds.
