This is a guided tour through a display of 9 swivel cannons of various types. The display was on view at an antique arms show in Allentown PA in December 2007. The signs give good accurate descriptions of each piece, as well as the origin, history, and use of swivel cannons.

  • No, I've seen the patent weapon you mean.

This iron swivel gun on post mount is only meant for shipboard use, I'd say, although you could mount it in a fort as well, you'd need to sink the post down quite far, or put a lot of bracing on it, which would not be needed on a ship since the post would already be integral to the ship structure.

  • Very fine pieces of ordnance and great info! Would be really interesting to see a video of the actual effectiveness of swivel guns on different ranges with different types typical ammunition.

  • GMTA. We are planning just that kind of thing. Thanks.

  • the black one(second one) is BRITTISH. the same mark is on many Confederate States Muskets, and Cannons, which were imported by jefferson Davis from Brittain

  • Thanks. The sign says "English" so we'll call it close enough.

  • The post mounted swivel gun is very interesting. I've seen old sketches of small swivel guns mounted on posts and set as booby traps for poachers. They were fitted with multiple trip wires and would swing 360 degrees to fire along the line that had been tripped. is this a possibility for this gun?

  • nice some pirates managed to take down a royal ship

  • Oh I didnt see the sign. hehe, but still there are wonderful guns

  • ...

  • Very well done.
