Not every pet owner has the luxury of sending their dogs to obedience school because it can be quite costly and time can sometimes be a factor. Rarely do people take into consideration that by simply training their dog themselves, they can save money, prevent scheduling conflicts and they can gain a stronger bond with their canine friend. Having both the role of owner and trainer will set an excellent groundwork for progress and the connection you and your dog will share will be very satisfying for you both.
You dont have to have the ability of talking to animals either. Having a positive attitude going into it will help you in the long run. Your dog will not be perfect, but they will do everything they can to please you because after all, dog is mans best friend. You need to have and display confidence so a trust can be earned because it is a huge learning process for both parties. Take charge, show them what good behavior is and establish positive reinforcement so the environment is not unconstructive. Incentive and praise will go a long way and your dog will appreciate you very much for it. There are many ways to make this hard work a little easier and some tips to gaining a lead with your dogs training.
5 Tips For Training A Dog Yourself
Training isnt the easiest thing to do, but sticking with it and remembering simple, key points will aid in successful dog obedience training.
#1 Some form of training and discipline should be present no matter what, but if you have children as well, it should be mandatory and a very important priority. It is recommended that an owner should begin training once they are introduced into the home when they are puppies.
#2 Above all, biting or other aggressive behavior should never be tolerated. Jumping up on people is not usually a violent act, but it should not be encouraged.
#3 Dogs are like children in a sense that you cannot punish them for something they did last week or even yesterday because they will not learn anything from it. Once a bad behavior presents itself, it should be addressed at that moment. Failure of proper timing will result in confusion and your efforts will prove to be pointless.
#4 Treats will be used frequently when first starting out. Eventually, your dog will not need the motivation of a treat to carry out a command or to behave.
#5 Your body language and overall attitude is easily read by your dog. You can use that to your advantage and show disappointment to put a stop to negative conduct from your dog.
The Importance Of Daily Exercise
A big influence on the dog obedience training is exercise. This is because if a dog is unhappy due to lack of exercise or stimulation, it will act out with undesirable behavior. A dog must play or exercise at least every single day to balance out any hyperactivity. Some dogs are more hyper than others, but every dog can become depressed, bored or anxious if they dont have the chance to run around and play. Even walking your dog in the morning and in the evening can be enough if you dont have a lot of room for them to get out. Another stimulating activity could be to kill two birds with one stone by using exercise with training. Fetch, hide and seek and even tug of war can all be very beneficial for their training and their health.
What Is Place Training?
During training, a useful tool to have as part of your repertoire is place training. This is designating a spot in your house like a small carpet against a wall or a small raised platform to send the dog to. At first, you will have to lead them to it with a treat and say the word place. If there are problems with barking, being hyper when there are visitors or begging during meals, then place training is what you need for dog obedience training, too. You will have to do it over and over and practice with them, but eventually they should go to their place when you use this word.
Establishing A Schedule Is Necessary For A Dog
Without discipline a dog cannot learn nor have an idea of what direction they should follow. If you consistently present them with a schedule, adjusting to their dog obedience training will go a lot smoother. Feed them around the same time everyday; once in the morning and once in the evening. When you take them for a walk or to exercise, try to set this time aside and the same goes for bedtime. Practice regular bathing and nail trimming because most dogs hate it; you should have them get used to it so its not such a chore. Establishing a schedule for them will make them happier because they will know what to expect.
And although you may not know what to expect for every single moment of dog obedience training, just remember to be patient and understanding. Dogs do want to please their owners and with your help they can and will do it.
