Me playing the mandolin part to some Irish music.

The track that I'm playing with is "The Humors of Glendart/Ingenish/On the Fly" as recorded by The Tossers.

I've been playing mandolin for three days.

Feedback appreciated :)

  • First off...good job. Just some constructive help now...try to learn alternate picking when you are picking single notes, it will make it sound less "robotic". Other then that...good job

  • @BeyondEvil308 Thanks, I've been working on alternate picking but haven't quite got it down with this tune yet. Thanks for the critique :)

  • @DrummerCoCa Me personally, I prefer a 1.0mm pick when im playing single notes and a .75mm pick when im strumming. At faster picking speeds, the 1.0mm pick is sturdy enough to play the speed, the .75 for me seems to get caught up too easily. But when im strumming, I like to hae the flex of the .75mm pick. This is all my personal experience. Mandolin is realitvly new to me, about 7 months. The music is new to me also. I mostly play death metal guitar and listen to metal and punk music.

  • @BeyondEvil308 Nice, I like metal too. I've been doing mandolin for a little over a week now so I haven't really had much chance to experiment with pick sizes, but I was wondering about that. Thanks for the advice, it's greatly appreciated!

  • @DrummerCoCa this was all foreign to me also. I felt so lost. Getting a strap is a must, You will be surprised at how much faster you can move around on the neck when you have the strap supporting the mandolin. ummmm...my favorite picks to use are Dunlap max grip. they put texture on the pick so when you are strumming fast, the pick wont rotate. I have trouble with jigs and trying to get that picking pattern down. I get lost sometimes. I listen to the tossers, and they got me into it

  • @BeyondEvil308 Yeah the Tossers are the reason I got a mandolin too, kinda made me fall in love with Irish music. And as for a strap, that's on my list of things to get when I have the time and money. I'll also stock up on more picks and get a case for the instrument pretty soon

  • @BeyondEvil308 maybe just something interesting to know: tony duggins of the tossers plays an .80mm pick, at least at live shows. i suppose it's the solution to be able to play melodies and strumm when needed.
