Global Electric Motorcars, a Chrysler company, has been in operation for ten years. Located in Fargo, North Dakota, Global Electric Motorcars manufactured its first vehicle in April 1998, a 48-volt GEM car that accommodated two passengers and had a top speed of 20 mph. Less than two months later, a significant breakthrough occurred in the market as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designated a new class of motor vehicle, the low-speed vehicle, also known as the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). The low-speed vehicle class allowed GEM cars to be driven on public roads if they met certain safety criteria such as having safety belts, headlamps, windshield wipers, and safety glass. GEM cars always come equipped with these safety features making them a benchmark in the industry.

GEM battery-electric vehicles not only represent a relatively new vehicle in an emerging market segment, but also a new and growing brand within the Chrysler family. Just like Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep®, or many of the other well-established brands in the company's portfolio, GEM stands for innovation and leadership.

Global Electric Motorcars aims to establish its brand presence both as the maker of the top-selling NEV in the market and the purveyor of one of the smartest solutions to traffic congestion and air quality problems yet to be introduced. The solution: zero-emissions personal transportation that is well integrated with traditional alternative transportation choices such as mass transit and carpooling.

GEM models are sophisticated yet simple. They represent a new kind of personal transportation, that expands the capacity to have fun. They represent a versatile and efficient way to get the job done, as well as a clean way to do everyday work. GEM cars harness and put to work the power of silence.

Today, Global Electric Motorcars remains committed to maintaining its leadership position in the NEV market with product improvements, innovations, and offerings. Currently, GEM cars are available in six unique models and are seen in cities, master planned communities, universities and colleges, industrial complexes, security companies, airports, and resorts throughout the world. Looking to the future, Global Electric Motorcars is strategically positioned within the Chrysler family to aid in the company's continuing efforts and commitment to developing, producing, and selling the world's most environmentally-friendly vehicles.

  • why not just make a BIGGER CAR !!

    a rail car.....normally called trolley....or electric train

the car is the problem its not the solution

so for short range commutes whats the solution?

RIDE A BICYCLE !!! you need to exercise and burn that extra fat on your belly

  • They are making them bigger! Google chevy volt, pheonix motor cars, or PHEV (plug in hybrid electric vehicle) Look at GE's hybrid locamotive. As far as a bicycle I agree with you too. However, I can't see a postman riding a bike with 10,000 letters on his back. This vehile can be the answer to low speed local travel.

  • im extremely aware of those vehicles but there is no battery production capacity to make them happen. Even Japan has a shortage of it. U.S. does not have any manufacturing capability and rely on china/korea for supply w/c the facility doesnt exist yet.

Denmark Post office use 3 Wheel bicycles that can carry 10K letters & packages. go to flickr and do a search !

  • I'm not sure what your trying to prove to me other than to suggest that we're all screwed. Bikes for everyone! Moms with 3 kids and its snowing, put them on a bike. People who work 10 miles from home, guess we can all get up 3 hours earlier so that they can pedal to work and get run over doing it. These don't sound likes real answers that the average person could commit to.

  • Maybe we can try to set new governmental policies to change the way we do business, create jobs in the US to start making and investing in new battery technolgy. We could also invest in renewable energy businesses to free ourselves from foreign oil and stop climate change. No one is suggesting that its easy or can be fixed tomorrow, but bikes are not going to solve this problem that's for sure.

  • And I would like to buy one, but they're too expensive :(

  • I definitely want to drive one but all the lights would be high power, low amp LEDs to save the battery.

  • @VaccinesKillBabies Hey genius, the video is over 3 years old. We have one, its called the volt, tesla, leaf, aptera, etc. As stated, this is for vehicles with municipal and postal like needs.

  • @stopglobalswarming Drilling for oil = emissions. Taking it to refineries = emissions. Refining it into a usable fuel = emissions. Taking it to gas stations across the country = emissions. Driving = emissions. Here is an electric car: Making electricity = emissions. Transporting electricity to your house = nothing. Driving = nothing. The "electric cars pollute just like gasoline cars" argument is true, BUT only a tiny fraction of the amount, AND it keeps the pollution at distant power plant.

  • bloody george.W (s.h.i.t) bush killed everything!! l´m not surprised and all teh bloody sheeple follows their stupidities..uffff. could carry on but wasting time in those wnkrs!!

  • I was against NEV b4. I never considered parks and governments. They could use these type of vehicles to reduced the fuel cost. Festivals could use these as well.

  • Electric cars are cool, but electricity is often made by using fuel for generation.

  • Well I'm not from US so.... are you going to air mail me the car ? P.S. since it's Christmas time and I don't really have any money why don't you make me a nice present ? :D

  • so would i be able to ride legally if im 13

  • i want one of these, you can ride it like a moped right? like you can ride without a permit / license on 35 - mph roads? the only thing is i live in a bad naborhood so i would want locks on the doors
