CH1:
Zach ran across the room and crashed into the bleachers. A few seconds later, he popped up, laughing his head off. The laughter didn't last long, however, because he saw a pursuing player charging at him at full speed. Waiting till the last second, he dodged out of the way like a superhero or a Jedi, causing his buff assailant to smash headfirst into a rather large piece of metal.
From my position inside the seats, I had a great view of the action. Zach backed away from his opponent, still laughing, and making bowing motions towards the girls on the sidelines. He flashed his blinding smile and headed back to the other side of the field. That boy really had it all. His blue eyes and award-winning smile could get him out of any trouble. I saw him use those traits now, trying to explain his absence to our 60+ substitute gym teacher, Mrs. Yets. She gave in after about eight seconds, and Zach rejoined the game, leaving me with just the possibly concussed jock and a few couples making out under the stands.
Its gym class at Poway High School.
Life here in sunny California hasn't ever been paradise. Far from it, actually. But, at moments like that, everything seemed a little brighter.
Zach was never a big sports guy. I don't think he really understands football. Even so, he was out there in one of those cheap public school jersey things, running around and avoiding tacklers like some sort of lemur. A really big, clumsy lemur, who had recently consumed several cups of coffee.
It's more than I can say. I spent every gym period here, in make-out land. Staring at all the other guys, who probably had futures, best friends, and real families. Feeling very jealous.
Its not like I didn't have any of those things. I just had second-rate ones. My future was probably going to contain community college, so I had that going for me. I had a best friend too, but just one. Zach Porter, the boy who was practically an angel to every adult, though I and every female member of the student body knew he was far from it. I guess I sort of had a family, too. Not my mom or dad, though. Dad was long gone, and if Mom kept drinking like this, she wasn't that far away. The closest thing I had to a family was the Porters. Ever since the 5th grade, I had been sneaking out my window to their house at least twice a week, knocking on Zach's window, and crashing on one of his beanbag chairs. Mrs. Porter had gotten used to seeing me the mornings after these excursions, and she no longer asked for an explanation when I turned up at the breakfast table, as I had been doing more and more often lately. I just got a smile, a bowl of cereal, and a kiss on the cheek as I went out the door, just like Zach and his brother, Vic.
Sometimes, it really felt like I was a part of the family. But, whenever I got home, I realized that all those mornings were just an illusion. The only person related to me and still breathing was my mother. Well, the woman who gave birth to me at least. I knew that my dad left her when I was about one and a half, though I don't know where he went.
My mom had been pretty good at first, but around my tenth birthday, she started drinking heavily. The first night I ran to Zach's house was the first night she came in yelling at me, telling me how everything was my fault. I remember every detail, how I dashed out the front door, and ran without any shoes on for almost a mile. I had imagined I could still hear her yelling behind me. I was a very fast runner, and soon I was at Zach's window, tapping frantically to get in.
