Why Philosophy? PART 2 Movement Toward Critical Consciousness in an Urban High School

Urban high school students expand their minds with Plato, Nietzsche, and Post-structuralism... "Why Philosophy?" documents 12th grade students as they engage in philosophical inquiry. Students explore definitions of "philosophy," explain key philosophical perspectives, explain their process of philosophical inquiry, and discuss such postmodern conundrums as "Does language create your reality?" and "If language is a cave like in Plato's Allegory of the Cave, how can we escape it?" In conclusion, students describe how studying philosophy changed their thinking.
