I do think that Loomis has some rather solid phrasing, particularly the stuff he showcased on his solo album. His Nevermore stuff is a bit weaker, in my opinion. If anything, though, it tends to sound a bit samey after a while, to me. He lacks the versatility that some other players have.

I certainly don't disregard phrasing - I just don't look for it in players like Jeff, and especially not on a video that exemplifies his chops rather than what he can do with them.

I listen to Jeff Loomis because he is a technically proficient player. If phrasing were that much more important to me, I wouldn't even be commenting on this video.

Criticizing somebody's taste in musicians like that is akin, to me, to criticizing somebody for not reading a Dickens novel because of his writing style. It's perfectly valid to discern musicians qualitatively based on their technical skill.

Besides, that's not even what I was talking about with whoever replied to me.

Yes, you're right, and that's part of what makes Jeff Loomis an excellent player. I just don't prefer him to other players, sometimes, because he doesn't really have a huge repertoire of techniques at his disposal that he can wield with the same mastery as his alternate picking, legato, and sweep picking.

@incangold but his right hand sweeping/picking is incredibly articulate and tight.
