  • I just did, gotta love wiki ! Then to get you talking again, can you tell more about the particularity of chikuzen biwa ? I've only read that it's supposed to be a style more modern and elegant but I'm still thirsty of explanations :)

thank you for your answer btw

  • @ossenna The repertoire of the instrument and the songwriting has the biggest impact on the sound, but even if you played the same song on a different biwa it would sound completely different. Listening to various examples is the best way to learn, but generally the Satsuma has a big, rough sound whereas the Chikuzen is more subtle, although the opposite can be quite true. The Chikuzen is the newest biwa, thus the most modern, though there are many radical modern compositions for the Satsuma.

  • Ometedou ! Beautiful performance. Can you tell us a bit about the chant is about ? (I'm thinking of the usual heike monogatari ^,^but since it's chikuzen style, I'm thinking it might it's something different)

  • @ossenna

    Thanks for the comment!

Actually Kawanakajima isn't from the Tale of the Heike but the historical Battles of the Kawanakajima (mid-1500s), specifically the forth battle in which the two generals Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin faced each other in on of the most famous single combats in Japanese history as Kenshin burst into the headquarters of the opposing forces. The shortened version we play deals with this and their legacy, but you can read more on Wikipedia if you are interested!

  • @ossenna I could go on quite a bit about the biwa, but space is limited here, so if you are interested feel free to send me a message and I can try to be as informative as possible and point you in the directions of some good recordings. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of good recordings available on YouTube, especially for the Chikuzen biwa, so it's difficult to get a good idea of the instrument...
