Sad thing is, after this debacle and Lancia's new rust proofing, the beta models became some of the most rust resistant cars you could buy in the UK at the time - but by this point the damage was done and the brand never recovered from it in the UK market

poor lancia. That scandal ruined one of the greatest cars of the 70's and would haunt them until the 90's

How would you have liked that job? Trying to sell new Lancias which only had minor visual differences from the four and five year old cars being returned for scrap because of the major rust defect? Lancia's reputation was sealed in the UK after this debacle; even 30 years later so many only remember the Beta's problems and not the many positive aspects of the car.

@morgrp Hi, i am looking to buy a lancia beta coupe, because I think it's just a gorgeous car, but now I'm reconsidering because of the rust problems i hear from. You seem to know a bit more about Lancia's than I do, so could you tell me if a Lancia Beta coupe 2000 i.e.(built 1984) is pretty rust resistant or if it isn't a smart buy.
Thanks in advance.

@morgrp yes..because lancia was forced by pressure from the media in 1980.....thats why it ruined the reputation

The ideal car from the 80-s would have had::
Italian styling
British interior
French comfort.
German engine
Swedish bodywork
Japanese marketing & dealership
American value for money

@helmuthoorn because lancia was forced by pressure from the media....

The Alfa Sud was just as bad, but they NEVER recalled their heeps.

The engine mountings aren't replaceable? I always thought that engine mounts are replaceable.

LOL@the end
"While they can't offer a guarantee for the new models, they do point to the new anti-corosion guarantee introduded in this country on . . . . . . April the 1st"
In other words she is saying - You'd be an April fool to beleive that LOL

Magic cars, engines were bullet proof, good fun with wiring looms and that rust that would appear from under the paint was a pain! I had 4 cars , 2 coupes 2l and HPE 2l and then HPE i.e. Under rated motor and better than any thing on the road at the time
to be fair we churned out some right heaps back in the 70's.....thats why we drove a Saab V4 which didn't rot in 5 seconds. Though for some reason we replaced it with a Fiat 850 coupe which did!
