American Indian bone fragments have been unearthed at a Bolsa Chica Mesa construction site where a residential community is planned.

California Native American Heritage Commission officials say the Brightwater Hearthside Homes site may be an ancient burial ground of international importance. Half the 174 bone fragments were found in the past 18 months.

Commission program analyst Dave Singleton says the property was once shared by the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians and Gabrieleno-Tongva.

After years of legal wrangling over plans to construct more than 300 homes at the site, developer Hearthside Homes got permission to build as long as bones are buried elsewhere.

  • We've been told the protests happen every 1st Saturday of the month, but did not see anybody protesting on the corner of Bolsa Chica and Warner on October 3rd. Does anybody have any updates or links with more current information?

    Thanks

  • I didn't see you out there defending our ancestors in this video. So why say things like that?

  • I doubt very much if there are many people actually left who could be declared true native, at least she is bringing this to the forefront.

But what kind of statement is that anyway.

  • shes not even native , she should just hush, just a thief

  • Please check out our channel to help we are helping protect this land. There are 25 known burial grounds in ORA-83 also there has been a discovery of coggeed stones which are 6,000-8,000 year old relics. If we build over this land we bury our history.

  • unnecessary development for an already over-populated area???? sad...but the greedy only want more. hopefully it will be preserved.

  • depressing

  • Had this event taken place a few weeks earlier I'm sure the journey would have given its support to this sacred site. I will keep this struggle in my prayers

  • Naui, are you aware of the "Peace and Dignity Journey"??? It's a spiritual run that occurs every four years and has two routes, one from Alaska to Panama and another from Tierra del Fuego to Panama. The runners are all indigenous and each day we run from one native community to another. This year's run was dedicated to the protection and honoring of sacred sites. I was involved in the inland california route but there was a coastal route that came through LA.

  • Great, I support you.

    Thanks
