Excerpt from performance by Tom Brosseau (with Hilary Hahn) at the Tractor Tavern, Seattle, 20 Jan 2007. "Blue Part of the Windshield" is from Brosseau's album, "Grand Forks" (2007).
Friendly teenager comes into The Audio Connection looking for used classical LPs. She plays each for about 30 sec., setting aside the ones she wants. "How can you decide that quickly if you like it?" "Oh, I just can", she replies. "We also have some used CDs." "No thanks, they don't sound like music." By now I'm curious who this kid is and ask her name. "Hilary", she replies. "So, I guess you're the musician on those 30' posters outside Benaroya Hall. She just smiles. Nice down to earth girl.
It's a shame that music has to have so many divisions. More people with different styles should get together this way. It would open up so much music to different audiences! I think people are much more open than we think they are. Perhaps they think they don't like a certain style, but it's only because they've never heard it. Give them the chance, and both performers and audience might be pleasantly surprised.
