This is pt 4 of the Charles Stanley sermon series on "Letting Go of Anger pt 4 Anger, & Forgiveness". You can e-mail Stanley @ askDrStanley@intouch.org In Touch is online @ InTouch.org

Ephesians 4:26-27 Anger: a strong feeling of intense displeasure, hostility or indignation as a result of a real, or imagined threat, insult, frustration, or injustice toward yourself, or others important to you

Forgiveness: is giving up resentment against someone, & our right to get even no matter what has been done to us. It is the surrendering of my right to hurt you back.

Unforgiveness: is the deliberate, willful refusal to give up one's resentment, & the right to get even based on the wrongful thought that somebody needs to pay.

Obstacles To Forgiveness:
1. Wanting to forgive somebody (once you want to forgive somebody, you can)
2. Rehearsing whatever they did to you (makes you angry again)
3. Pride (saying that they need to come to you instead of you to them)
4. Fear
5. Rejection
6. Being misunderstood
7. Negative advice (people who may have our interest at heart may not be giving us Godly advice)
8. Partial forgiveness (like partial disobedience is really full disobedience, so is this full unforgiveness)
9. Don't feel like it

Matthew 6:12-15 (This is not referring to salvation. This is referring to your fellowship, not your relationship to God, & Jesus. Ephesians 2:8-9 Once you are saved, you are saved for good, & eternity.) Matthew 18:21, 23, 32-35 You might as well just read all the verses in between.

Ephesians 4:30-32

As a believer, It is our responsibility to take the initiative in dealing with forgiveness. They may not want to deal with it, but it is our responsibility as believers.

Forgiveness isn't easy. Sometimes it takes time, but you want to start as soon as possible. Don't let anger become deep rooted anything. Don't let anger become a form of deep rooted bitterness deep down inside of you. Remember, you can be angry, just don't sin, or let it become a problem. Forgiveness isn't always going to be able to happen right away.

Forgiveness is one of the most unselfish acts we could perform.

You may have to go through the steps until what you say, what you feel, & what you want becomes an experience inside of you, that you know that you've genuinely forgiven them.

To Deal with anger:
1. Acknowledge you have experienced God's total forgiveness in your life.
2. Confess your anger, hostility, bitterness, resentment, & rage.
3. Realize, & acknowledge that unforgiveness is a violation of the Word of God.
4. Ask God to forgive you. (for your attitude, what you've said, & done to this person)
5. Lay down your anger, & bitterness by the power of the Holy Spirit that lives within you, & an act of your will(you choose to).

If You Have Forgiven:
1. You will not feel the same way.
2. Your harsh feelings are replaced with compassion.
3. You will accept them the way they are.
4. You will consider the reasons for their actions.
5. You will thank God for allowing this to happen to teach you about His grace.

There is nothing in the scripture about conditional forgiveness. We are to be forgiving no matter what the situation may be. Genuine forgiveness forgives with no limitations, & no demands.
