This man, known to me only as Tony, gave this performance on 12 March 2005 near Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Afterward I tried to hand him a dollar, which, in a display of remarkable boldness and panhandling finesse, he refused with a gesture of disdain; his performance was worth more than that. I conceded the point and forked over a few more bills.

  • Was he the same guy? My memory, it fades. Didn't he also give you a lesson on how to safely give to a panhandler? "Look man, you doing it all wrong!"

  • Yes he did. He pointed out that I should have my back partially turned when removing the wallet from my pocket (keeping my eye on the intended recipient of the cash), so as to prevent him from snatching my wallet. Conversation had turned in this direction because Tony and I had just witnessed someone getting his wallet snatched by two men who had evidently just asked the victim for some change.

  • Yes, this was filmed shortly before the Slint show. Didn't you end up giving Tony the extra ticket you couldn't sell?
