Helen's appearance at the ball doesn't go down too well with Hubert's parents. TRIVIA: Being the producer of "Sins," Joan Collins put together the cast. She said she had seen Neil Dickson (who would go on to appear on "Dynasty" in 1987) in "A.D.," liked his style and cast him to play Hubert. Catherine Mary Stewart (young Helene) was cast following her stint on "Days of Our Lives," while Timothy Dalton (who became James Bond 007 after "Sins") caught Collins' eye on Judith Krantz's "Mistral's Daughter" in September 1984.

Is everybody gay here?

The other gay man, Ellen's "play-brother," an actual "brothah!" is an out gay man from Philly who works in fashion and caters delusions of being European in order to succeed in that world. The stereotypes abound, I tell you.
But this is 80's TV... What can you expect

You're absolutely right, Jansenoslo. It's indeed problematic and oh-so-stereotypical. Before 1990, it seems non-flamboyant gays on television were almost always portrayed as sexually confused, rather than definitively gay. And that's exactly what they're doing by juxtaposing those "make the audience assume he's gay" images with his fathers insults and his desperate infatuation with Helen.
