NOTIONS OF SILENCE 1
The hypnotic stillness and silence of this reflecting pool is punctuated by drops of water falling from the caves vaulted ceiling, The tiny voice of each drop hitting the waters surface magnified and echoing throughout the empty cavernous space, produces a captivating symphony of sound. Recorded in real time (10mins. 1sec.) this work was filmed on a 35mm stills camera, incidentally capturing a slice of geological history. The still image and sporadic spacing of sound distorts our perception of time.

This video Notions of silence 1, is one of two works which were shown as part of an exhibition entitled Sequence, along with works by Darren Almond, Padraig Cunningham, Roisin Loughrey and Margo McNulty. Notions of silence 1 and 2, were projected on two 16 x 9 screens on facing walls of a vast warehouse.

This piece has been influenced by works by Yves Klein's Monotone symphony, John Cage's "4'33",The tibetan book of the dead, Gary Zukov's "The dancing Wu Li masters", Barrnet Newman, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock.

I envisage showing this work as a projection on the floor of an exhibition space, adding an unsettling dimension to the piece as the ripples radiate outwards towards the viewer.

  • one of my twitter followers said she was desperate for a pee so I sent her this video :')

  • @MsHolli09 Unfortunately because of the nature of some of my videos I have heard a lot of pee jokes, and it does get rather tiring, but well done you, you brought a smile to my face, thank you for sharing my video.

If you find the need in similar or other circumstances to send a video to a friend in need I have more than sixty videos filmed in various locations in nature, many with the sound of water, be it the sea, lake river and of course a cave.

  • I am an art teacher and I used this as a sound effect while my 2nd and 3rd graders did "cave paintings" in large refridgerator boxes in a dark room with flashlites! They loved it!

  • I LOVED the video, but it gave me the urge to have to pee....

  • This is perfect! I am a preschool teacher, and recently the children have been exploring geology. Some of our children went on a cave tour recently, while some are quite frightened of the whole cave idea.

So tommorow, I am setting up a "cave" in the corner of our classroom, complete with a cave, plants, animals, crystals, a "reflective pool" (read: mirror) and even glow-worms. All we need is ambient sound!

We'll play some soft pan-flute music in the background, the kids will love it! Thanks!

  • @pongboy1100 well it would be easy, but i like the game the way it is, except a little mods is vital
