Iowa jumped out to the early lead and didn't look back, defeating Pac-10 co-champion Washington, 38-18, in the 62nd annual Sun Bowl at El Paso, TX. Sedrick Shaw started the Iowa scoring by taking a handoff and running 58 yeards for a touchdown only 1:52 into the game. kickers Brion Hurley and Zach Bromert each added a pair of field goals. A snap over the punter's head lead to a safety and a 21-0 halftime lead for the Hawkeyes. Hurley kicked his third field goal of the day from 50 yards out as Iowa's lead climbed to 24 in the third quarter. Washington got on the board for the first time at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter when Shane Fortney hit Jerome Pathon on a 30-yard touchdown pass. Iowa fullback Michael Burger scored on runs of eight- and one-yard to increase the score to 38-6 before Washington added two late scores. The Iowa defense recorded four sacks while forcing three fumbles. Hawkeye running backs Shaw (135) and Tavian Banks (122) each rushed for over 100 yards. The win moved Iowa's final record to 8-4.

Special thanks to Michael Lynch.

  • HAHA BOB SAPP #72 ON WASHINGTON

  • I miss Sedrick Shaw. He had speed but ran hardnosed and tough like a fullback. He was intense yet humble. At the 1995 spring game my friend and I caught his eye and we both made a facetous Heisman pose. He chuckled, shook his head and said "I'm nothing without those guys" and pointed at some of our offensive linemen. He made a lot of remarks to the press like that but seeing it live I realized he genuinely believed that. Sed had the right attitude.

  • A lot of people laugh about the winged-uniforms Iowa wore at that time, I thought the black ones looked good, but the white ones not so much.

  • This game was tailor scripted for Hayden Fry. Washington had pasted us twice in the Rose Bowl. We had a disappointing season at 7-4 when the mantra for the year was "Think Big." The Huskies come in as Pac Ten co-champions and the Hawkeyes the big underdogs.

We had 'em just where we wanted them and beat the crap out of them. Thanks for posting this.
