Tempo came into my life just 6 short weeks ago. Through flyball and other dog sports I had developed a love for this breed and had been hunting for a specific dog for over a year. Finally Tempo came along, the product of a couple who decided she had too much energy for them. From the second she walked through the door she fit in like she'd been here her whole life. I couldn't have asked for a better fitting dog and things finally felt "complete" in my pack. As soon as I got Tempo it was clear she had a limp going on with her left rear leg. Since she'd recently had puppies when I got her I thought perhaps she was just out of shape and needed some conditioning again. Over the next month I exercised her and got her into fantastic shape. But the limp persisted so off to the vet for x-rays we went. What the x-rays showed was that at some point in her life she'd suffered a traumatic hip fracture. The head of her femur was almost completely broken off. We were all surprised she got around on it as well as she did after seeing the x-rays! So, we scheduled her to have a routine FHO done to help her live a more pain-free life.
On Monday, March 22, Tempo went in for her FHO. The surgery itself went as planned and would have been a success. However, when the vet staff attempted to get Tempo to come-to, though her heart was beating strong, she was completely unresponsive neurologically. Not so much as a pupil dilation. Unfortunately they suspect that sometime during surgery she threw a blood clot to her brain. I had no choice but to let my beautiful girl go. I have never felt so helpless in my life. I am completely heartbroken over this. We all know there are very small risks with anesthesia/surgery, but never did I expect to drop Tempo off at the vet for a surgery I thought would improve her quality of life...and then never see alive her again. Devastated does not even begin to cover it.
Rest in Peace, my sweet girlie. I love you.
Rest well, Tempo.
