Rudolph made his television debut on NBC in 1964, when Rankin/Bass produced a stop motion animated TV special of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer that became a popular hit in itself. This version was re-broadcast annually many times over the years, even after it was finally released on video and then DVD.

It now airs several times during the Christmas season (on CBS rather than NBC), making it the longest-running TV special in terms of consecutive years. A small bit of trivia regarding the 1964 production, the Roman Numeral Date given at the beginning of the show is in error, missing the second "M", (MCLXIV) which equates to the year 1164. It should have read MCMLXIV to be correct.

In 1976, a sequel to the Rankin-Bass original special was produced, entitled Rudolph's Shiny New Year, and then a third in 1979 entitled Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July. Then in 2001, a fourth in the series was released titled Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys.

  • I remember seeing this song on an ABC-special called "25 Days Of Christmas" when I was 13. Man this movie brings back good memories! They should put that snowdude in more Christmas movies, just to show America that going back to originality speaks importance. Awesome song!

  • @stevarino1989

Yep, talk about bad orchestration. I used to shut the movie off after this song though.

  • I LOVE this song!! It just doesn't feel like Christmastime without it.

  • This song makes me think of my wedding, and my sister's wedding.I had a fall wedding with lots of gold tones and she had a winter wedding with lots of silver tones. Silver and Gold, Day and Night, we are as different as those, but still work together.

  • @stevarino1989 On the DVD version, the original audio track is replaced with that of the cut from the soundtrack. Not sure why CBS won't allow them to use that cut for broadcasts, it's so noticeable even to those who don't have perfect pitch like I do

  • If you dislike this then you are the Heat Miser

  • MY GRAM LOVED THIS SONG.. :):) I REMEMBER HER HUMMING IT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER.. THOSE WERE THE DAYS.. :) OX

  • During his junior year, he was sitting in English class, listening to a lecture on Beowulf, when he suddenly realized he was wasting his time. As he walked out the door, the professor made a snide remark, and Ives slammed the door behind him. Sixty years later, the school named a building after its most famous dropout. Ives was also involved in Freemasonry from 1927 onward KAPOW!!
