Tr. by Bynner (en).

A lonely swan from the sea flies,
To alight on puddles it does not deign.
Nesting in the poplar of pearls
It spies and questions green birds twain:
"Don't you fear the threat of slings,
Perched on top of branches so high?
Nice clothes invite pointing fingers,
High climbers god's good will defy.
Bird-hunters will crave me in vain,
For I roam the limitless sky."

Thank you very much for the recording!

I wikied Abraham Chan's reconstruction. Noticed there's no 二等介音。 And one needs to distinguish wi, yi & wyi. That's so difficult!

  • I'm just wondering: have you looked at Abraham S. Chan's reconstruction of Middle Chinese? It differs significantly from what you've used here. Just for fun, I made a recording of Li Bai's 關山月 using a modification of Chan's reconstruction. You can hear it at suburbanspleen.podbean.com/mf/web/8e3674/Guanshanyuemc.mp3
