If you use it as a pocket diaper, do you need to separate the insert from the diaper before washing or will the agitation from the machine get it out?

The pocket is nice and wide so most inserts will simply fall out by themselves in the machine, especially if you have a front loader. The inserts that do not fall out, however, are still cleaned and can be separated prior to drying. Works like a charm!
