A retired medical practitioner who has over 1,400 videos to his name, and with a fan base of thousands spread over India, Pakistan, the US, Canada and the UK in just 18 months, the 65-year-old doctor is Indias latest YouTube sensation. His 2.2 million views would turn Britney Spears green with envy. Theres just no stopping this bespectacled grandfather of four whose brief disappearance from the web world in August created such a flutter that he rushed back for his agonized fans, karaoke system in place and mike in hand, singing Justin Timberlake, Cliff Richard and Madonna in his inimitable style. After all, not too many can resist his take on Michael Jacksons Beat It, which he literally translates into Peeto, Peeto. As the wide-eyed, silver-haired singer swivels in his chair, the reflection of his computer screen all over his broad-rimmed glasses, an almost ethereal experience grips viewers, who remain glued to their seats while he belts out Avril Lavignes Sk8er Boi, his personal chartbuster. I prefer singing songs by female artists, says the Bryan Adams and Mohammed Rafi fan, who sometimes can be seen shaking off one of his grandchildren as they perch themselves on his lap. It all started a few years ago when the crooner from Delhis Paschim Vihar started uploading his videos in cyber space, calling himself a humming non-singer. Someone discovered http://www.youtube.com/user/DrKsongs as he looked around for a Rafi song on YouTube. There was no looking back after that. The response has been extraordinary. While on the one hand obscene abuses cluttered his inbox — someone even asked him when he was going to die — on the other, there were people calling themselves his devotees. Some said he sounded like a braying donkey while others said he deserved a music ratna from the government. Good or bad, all posts are equally valuable to him. Hes happy that listeners react in real-time from around the world. Praises please me, abuses amuse me. I feel indebted to every one of you for the time spent by you in assessing me as good or bad, he writes to his fans, some of whom have gone to the extent of forming fan clubs and theme evenings in honour of him and his special talent. He now has seven fan clubs across the globe; two are in the US with medical doctors for members and theres one in Singapore, an all-pilots group. Imitating the video legend, his fans pay tribute at dinner parties and sing James Blunts Youre beautiful in Chaudhry style. Emotional about those who love him, he says the US fan club with 310 members is a carry forward relationship from some past life. I remained away from you for 65 years. Now we shall remain together until we live together. But closest to his heart are his fans from Pakistan. It was they who first admired his talent. We Pakistanis are in shock. We used to pride ourselves that we had Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Noor Jehan, Reshman and Nusrat Fateh Ali, but now we are dumb and speechless, reads a comment on YouTube from across the border. With the advent of Chaudhry, you Indians have left us far behind. We will never catch up, we stand defeated. But offers to appear for live concerts in Lahore have been dismissed. I cannot perform without lyrics and a computer screen, says the man who served as a doctor for 30 years after graduating from Aligarh Muslim University, where he did his MBBS, and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. Far from cringing at his exploits, his family loves the attention the old man is getting. His daughter is a big fan and his wife, a doctor like him, often compliments him. She is, however, comparatively shy and doesnt like to sing along on camera. Though the Punjabi, originally from Multan in Pakistan, hasnt made any money as yet from his exploits on the internet, he is optimistic he will. Already, his original lyrics, cover songs are available for paid download on his website. You never know with Chaudhry. His version of Woodstock may be on the cards next.
