Security in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is virtually non-existent. Although U.N. peacekeeping troops are in the capital, Kelly Cobiella reports that gangs armed with machetes rule the streets.

  • I returned from Port Au Prince yesterday. For anyone going there, there is no reason to fear. Much of downtown still looks like this and many people still live in tents. The Iron Market has been restored and I felt safe walking in the daytime. Banks are open (not at the airport as far as I could find) and there is an air conditioned place to eat as well as a supermarket (Roi des Roi) near the Park Hotel. The Haitien Museum at Champ de Mars is open.

  • @usabiaga ignorance... what are these comments ignoring? I don't share their views, but 'ignorant' is a word used just to silence people. According to people like you, folks are 'ignorant' only when they do not share your views!

  • Suddenly I have so much more respect for Japanese people and their reaction to the tsunami.
