Smooth-- Andy and the boys moving in similar territory as Joe Jackson on this record, not sure who's influencing who..doesn't matter I suppose, I couldn't do without either.

perfect pop song? this isn't memorable at all.. its one of colin's worst songs.. IMO of course.

Because Andy Partridge decided to quit touring in 1982 just at the time XTC were starting to make a real name for themselves. It was totally destructive and their original drummer Terry Chambers was so disgusted with the decision he left the band soon afterwards

I'm really confused as to why XTC never got to be as big as Talking Heads.

One of my favourites, I saw them twice here in Australia late 70's early 80's bloody awesome shows, so much energy. Hard to beat....pun intended

Love this song - and I'll play it over and over, but it still sounds like he's saying Walking round a telephone pole!!!!!!!!

The LP version here is way better than the "single" version. In my opinion

Memories of a fantastic time, happy days skylarking with my senses working overtime

Holy flip, this is the PERFECT pop song. It's short, but there's a lot of substance. It's relatively simple, but not sparse or uninteresting. It's accessible, but not derivative or overly commercial. The lyrics have the perfect balance between the vague and the specific ends of the spectrum. And there's genuine emotion, and that's joy. Reminds me of Animal Collective's newer stuff.

In 1979, the whole "Drums And Wires" LP seemed to be a ray of hope for the future of rock and roll, but "Ten Feet Tall" especially still hits a soft spot - a ballad, a dance tune, refined craftsmanship but as accessible and ethereal as a Doo Wop tune decades earlier.
Hard to believe but it's almost exactly 30 years since the demise of NYC's WPIX-FM that was, at we knew even then, as the last chance .
