One of Kapustin's most exciting and accessible pieces, and a Sonata at that. With Hamelin's precision and musicality, who could ask for more?

Many parts of this movement just make me happy, some make me smile like the short bit from 5:35 on (prepared before), shameless to introduce a straight boogie-woogie style.

I'd love to play this, but it would take me a long time to learn. Sometimes i wish there was a shorter version of the first part, but then it would probably be more of a saloon piece.

I highly recommend Hamelin's "Jazz" CD, aside from Kapustin there's more awesome music on it!

  • Oh, gosh~~ is this his own handwriting?

  • @largolegato yup, should be safe to assume. glad you like the piece!

  • 7:30 - 7:50 is very deep.

  • @pldecal1 definitely an interesting passage. i'd say the whole thing is very deep =)

  • I SHOULDVE RECORDED THIS SONATA WHEN I HAD IT IN MY FINGERS 3 YEARS BACK... :( FIRST VIDEO ON YOUTUBE! WELL MAYBE SOON...!

  • @alkanian hah, definitely! would love to hear the sonata from you. well, relearning pieces isn't too hard, right? :> my teacher is having a Kapustin/Gershwin student recital soon, by the way, i'm going to play the Suite in the Old Style and probably upload it (my current performance on YT is way inaccurate). kapustin is really popular among ambitious young students, i think, and that's great. i just wish more of his music was recorded (piano concerti 1,3,5,6..).

  • Kaupustin is a Genius. I composed a piece dedicated to him...it´s on my channel.

  • @DavidMumo it's somewhere on YT, i think. otherwise, on hamelin's excellent CD (in a state of jazz).

  • where's the second movement?

  • @Sorcerer88 But you are doing an excellent job with the Allemande ... :-)

And no, I do not intend to practise the second sonata, maybe one of his shorter pieces some day.
