ABBA performing in that excellent mini concert for the Dick Cavett Show April 1981
Sadly it was to be their last live concert performance

Sometimes when I'm mad
There's a part of me
That seems to be a little sad
Sometimes when I scream
There's a voice in me that says
"You shouldn't be so mean"
Oh no oh no

Part of me is acting
While the other stands beside
Yes I am to myself
What Jekyll must have been to Hyde

We're like sun and rainy weather
Sometimes we're a hit together
Me and I
Gloomy moods and inspiration
We're a funny combination
Me and I

I don't think I'm different
Or in any way unique
Think about yourself for a minute
And you'll find the answer in it
Everyone's a freak

Sometimes I have toyed
With ideas that I got
From good old Dr Freud
Nothing new of course
It may seem to you
I try to break through open doors
Oh no oh no

I just wanna say
A lot of that applies to me
'Cause it's an explanation
To my split identity

We're like sun and rainy weather
Sometimes we're a hit together
Me and I
Gloomy moods and inspiration
We're a funny combination
Me and I

I don't think I'm different
Or in any way unique
Think about yourself for a minute
And you'll find the answer in it
Everyone's a freak

Me and I
We're like sun and rainy weather
Sometimes we're a hit together
Me and I
Gloomy moods and inspiration
We're a funny combination
Me and I

I don't think I'm different
Or in any way unique
Think about yourself for a minute
And you'll find the answer in it
Everyone's a freak

We're like sun and rainy weather
Sometimes we're a hit together
Me and I
Gloomy moods and inspiration
We're a funny combination
Me and I

  • Personally i don't think they were trying to be high brow, i feel that they were influenced by the majority of the music of that period which was early synth pop such as Numan, Human League, Depeche, Kraftwerk and so on... i also think they do a pretty good job too, but in doing so they probably did alienate some fans, it is strange when a band you like changes direction, like Dylan going "electric" but oh how we miss 'em now! wish they would take a leaf from the stone roses book!

  • @marshalltownlufc Thanks for the great comment M. They were like a sponge absoring influences from different sources but then making them their own i an interesting way - I loved all their directions ! Maybe they got to far ahead of their Pop audience at the end . If the Roses can get back together there is hope for ABBA ! Squire is a real cool gutarist and Ian Brown is a real cool dude !

  • I love this live version.!

  • @wawa96loveabba

    Me tooooo !

  • Kind of a quirky song with the lyrics. I like it, but this is an example why I think ABBA would have declined, anyway. I just don't think the public wanted a mature ABBA as shown here, they wanted more Dancing Queen.

As much of an Agnetha fanatic as I am, gotta admit, Frida is simply phenomenal singing here. She is one of the most underrated singers in history.

It's a crime against humanity this performance is not on DVD. This was a super duper perfromance by the group.

  • @SuperDrJeckyl

Lets keep the fingers crossed for a full dvd release soon !

Both girls are in fine voice on this but Frida really blows me away on Super Trouper here :)

  • excellent excellent excellent Abba was all 100% here

  • One of my favourite songs from them. :)

  • @TheSuperFunkAndDisco From their Wikipedia page, "Although it topped the album charts across most of Europe, including the UK and Germany, The Visitors was not as commercially successful as its predecessors, showing a commercial decline in previously loyal markets such as France, Australia or Japan."

I know it's Wikipedia, but the facts show it was true.

I LOVED The Visitor and their emerging sound, but I don't think the casual fans were going to follow. It was probably a great time to end.

  • @SuperDrJeckyl Their sales were startin' to decline? You're kiddin' of course. At 1980-81 ABBAsound was a trademark & maybe in America their sales were startin' to decline after The Name Of The Game. But not in Uk & other european countries. In 1981 the group's popularity was higher than ever. And albums continued chart toppin' while the songs were peakin' number 34, like Head Over Heels in 1982. And The Visitors was one of the most commercially succesful ABBA albums.

  • @SuperDrJeckyl Part 2...I think this is one of the reasons Bjorn and Benny act like such jerks at time when it comes to ABBA reunion talk. I feel they were moving away from the Dancing Queen pop and wanted to make what they felt were high brow music. Looking at their post ABBA output, I know I'm correct.

Look at all the ABBA tributes. They always dress up in the early wild garb the girls wore earlier in ABBA.

I'm like you, I liked this and the rest. But, we're diehards.

  • @TheSuperFunkAndDisco Make no mistake, I loved ABBA when they were entering this period where they were getting more "sophisticated" as this song and The Visitors indicated.

I'm talking about the casual fans. I'm going from memory, but it seems their sales were starting to decline. I think it's because the public wanted the pop Dancing Queen ABBA, not Me and I.
