@Seigu007 That comet would have most likely hit the Earth or Venus if Jupiter hadn't pulled it in, and it would have wiped out all life on earth, we wouldn't be here now to discuss this.

@Seigu007: This was back in 1994 at a time when the theory of large Planetary Impacts was still largely doubted. These "nerds" are happy because the impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter showed that large objects can and still do hit the Planets. Which is kinda relevant since in the last few years alone there have been 2 or more Near Earth Objects. So yeah.

@Seigu007 Telescopic images and spectroscopy will tell you things you didn't know about the makeup and nature of the Jovian atmosphere, and the dynamics of large impacts. And like a distant thunderstorm, it's just a cool thing to watch in real time...as long as it's not *your* planet...
