Digital Hollywood's Graduate School of Digital Content, NTT Data, and Fujiyama have launched a "distributed rendering" video production demonstration experiment that employs distributed computing technology.
The partners began the experiment this August, and it is scheduled to continue until December. The video will highlight Japan's most famous battle, the "Battle of Sekigahara". Plans call for producing the video with a resolution of approximately 8 million pixels, or quadruple the resolution of the current high-definition standard, in an effort to establish a next-generation digital cinema format.
The partners will invite Internet users to allow them to link idle home PCs together over the Internet in order to generate the computer graphics for huge battle scenes.
One of the goals of the experiment is to popularize the idea of sharing existing computer resources (CPU) as part of an overall "digital ecological movement".
