Five and a Half Minute Hallway

The subtitles have the feel of the book itself. An amateur video, yes, but in some respects well-played.

If you understand the convinience then why did you comment? I don't remember everyone having directing/editing experience, nor a professional studio at home.

I don't understand why you didn't show the five and a half minute hallway from the camera's perspective. It sort of kills the whole thing when it isn't one continuous take.
Like, it's not hard to do, why is it like that? This bothers the hell out of me.

I don't mean to be harsh, but why didn't you use the correct fonts for the last part of the video? The fonts were one of the most vital parts of the book.

Yeah, I like how it sort of starts out following HOL, but then it kind of falls apart when he opens the door and you can't see anything and during the Holloway scene you can see a window which is not supposed to be present. I would love to see HOL as a movie, but only the Navidson Record portion of it, but I fear it would look to dark to see anything like this or computer animation will make it to fake. I want to enter the hallway and get a sense of realness, which may be impossible.

@Preludefilms I agree, but there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism.

I think the weakest aspect of this production was the sound, and by extension, the voice acting. Not everybody is an actor, I appreciate that, but given the subject matter and the strong need for a dramatic reading, it becomes much more important. Even with a huge budget and high end equipment, any adaptation of House of Leaves would ultimately be highly atmospheric and dialogue heavy. If you could get a really talented voice actor to overdub, it'd make a huge difference.

Were I to knit-pick, I'd comment on how the shot isn't continuous so much more easily faked and not as believable.

You did it wrong. The door is facing North, he exists through the window to the East (which would be the RIGHT window in this video) and re-enters to the west (which would be the LEFT). You have him exiting through the west and entering through the east. Just to be obnoxiously meticulous about detail.
Nice job though.

It does not not work on bit when the edits are shown.

is this the origanal one by the film students?
-
i think the beginning was done well. I am going to recreate this and only film up to him opening the door.
-
never mind... saw the crexdits. hey to all the haters, dont criticize untill you make one better!
-
really liked it. but hey, who is the song by?
-
It's all right... but isn't 5 1/2 minute hallway one of the segments when no one actually appears on film? You just hear their voices in the background?
-
Well it wasnt TERRIBLE now
-
learn to act, you fuckwits. If you are going to make a video about a piece of fiction this good, you need to do it right.
-
Read "House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski and then you'll understand.
-
what in the everling fuck is this about.
I dont get it.
-
a foul ball... better than a swing and a miss i suppose.

I wish there was a well done professional movie version of that book.

"whhuuAt du u seeEE?"
Personally I like the effort, but I think it wasn't very well done at all. not bad for amateurs though. also I would pay more attention to the text. its a hard thing to do.

it looks better uncompressed.
it was done at university level, but several years ago

honestly, you should have done something about that door. With how much effort you put into this, the glass backdoor isn't working, and should have been modified at least.
having said that, I like it. I was just about to do this, and decided to look it up to see if anyone had. Oh, but I'm still doing one....hehe

i definitely agree about the door.
it was done for a film class and the location was chosen without my direction. everything else was done by me personally, but unfortunately i could not get a better location. that damned door with the blinds and the awkward angle always did bug me too

The beginning was good, and followed the book. It felt like I was watching what Zampano had written about. But then when it got to Halloway Roberts, it started to get where it felt like it was trying to hard to be a horror flick, and got a little cheesy. I think it would have been more dramatic if it had been simpler and had stayed more like how Navidson "did" it.

thanks. cheesy isnt a word i would look for in a good review but i think you are kind of right anyway. my movie version is unable to reach the status of the book for obvious reasons. the Halloway Roberts sequence is from Exploration #4. it is referred to as more of a revolting disturbing sequence of random images, completely confusing and I used peices of the book to fill in my own gaps.
