C-5M Super Galaxy Demonstration
436th Airlift Wing

2009 Dover AFB Open House & Airshow
Dover AFB, Delaware
Sunday June 21, 2009

IN THIS VIDEO, watch as members of the 436th Airlift Wing take one of three C-5M Super Galaxy transports up for a short demonstration over Dover AFB. I only wish they had used either Runway 14, 19, or 32 (via Echo) to take off, since you really can't get an idea of how short of a takeoff roll the M-model can get when it's light. Take note of the sound of the new General Electric CF6 engines - it sounds absolutely nothing like the TF39s of the C-5A, C-5B, and C-5C aircraft. All of the C-5Bs and the two C-5Cs will receive the new engines under RERP as well as the new glass cockpit on the AMP.

Like what you've seen? If you are interested in purchasing DVDs of specific aircraft and/or of airshows, interested in anything and everything related to airshows (where the jet teams will show up, all airshow performers, airshow reports from airshows I have attended, previews of airshows I will be attending, etc.), a much more easier to navigate "version" of all of my videos, and/or everything there is related to aviation - including spotting guides to my favorite airports and military bases and aircraft factfiles, please take the time to check out Steve's Airshow World at http://www.stevesairshow.com .

  • MUCH, MUCH, quieter than its sister older model. However, i kinda miss that "whine sound" to be quite honest, you just felt, heard, & KNEW it was coming....!!!

  • I like the vibrating sound the TF39 engines had during taking off. Sorta sounded like a V8 engine.

  • Its just not the same without that Galaxy sound. I love the whine sound you get from the older galaxy.

  • no "whine sound" but there was an awesome scream coming from the engines

  • Imagine if they chose RB211-535s from the 747 instead of CF6-80C2s.

  • shut up let me hear the plane

  • Air show announcers are the freakin' worst....

WE GET IT, it's a C-5M! And FTR- The firetruck whine of the old engines can't be beat, 20% increase in thrust or not.

  • @nev594 400 for ride? you'd need ALOT more to cover maintence.

  • I miss the old engines too. They had a very uinique whine. That I is one reason why I've always loved the C-5. Let's all get together and save one with the old engines when the fleet retires at Davis Monthan. We can restore it and fly it around the counttry and then charge people $400 for rides:)

  • C-5 hath been castrated.

  • @PaganEgyptian Thanks.

I'm around airliners all day.....the newer engines found on the A330 and 777 are amazing in durability....light years ahead of ancient TF-39's

This should be factored in when discussing further work on the C-5M
