On the 5th of March 2011, I went to Brede Pumping Station as they were having one of their steaming days. The engines run on compressed air from two large trailer compressors, you can see this in one of the engine house pictures at the end of the video. This does mean that some of the engines run a little "lumpy, but the engines are very impressive and it was great to see them running well.

The first engine is a little steam pumping unit that one person could pick up, the large brown painted tripple expanssion engine of 410hp is the biggest I have ever seen. I have included a photo of a 2 pence piece in the big end shell to show the scale.

There is also a nuclear bunker from the cold war era, a somewhat chilling place to be! But it does have a very nice Petter PJ3, 33hp diesel engine.

I hope you enjoy the video, all comments and questions welcome....

  • Its ok,but nothing compares to the beauty and majesty of Crossness.

  • Ah ok.

  • @steamwally Wel 1 is but when I went there the other was there but some bits were removed.

  • Yeah, I will try and have a look round it, is the engine running now?

  • @steamwally Well, Yes, I admit Kempton Great Engines are massive, Alot bigger but with the 3 stages, If you get the chance in may, go on the Tour as you go up the 3 stages of the engine and get to look in the top of 1 of the cylinders, im not kiding, theres enough room to have a tea party in there.

  • Thanks, it's well worth a visit. I'm certain the engines at Kempton are a huge amount bigger, about 1000hp arn't they, so about twice the size!
