Flow visualization with oil fog and laser sheet in Hamburg University's WOTAN wind tunnel shows the eddy structures in the urban boundary layer above the simplified wind tunnel model of a hypothetical European city called "Michel-Stadt".
The presence of larger and smaller vortices has a large influence on the transport of heat, moisture or pollutants in urban environment. The proper modelling of these structures (which we call together the atmospheric boundary layer) is essential part of the wind tunnel modelling of urban flow and dispersion phenomena.
