The introduction to a five part series (in development), which chronicles the lives and stories of the men that were involved with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930's and 40's.
@meinLiebsterFeind There's the California Conservation Corps that is still going, doing work like creating fire breaks in undeveloped areas, maintaining and building trails in state parks, preserving watershed. The bigger program that you're speaking of could be reinstated, but I think it would have to be reformated at this junture. One basis for the program was to stave off revolution during the Great Depression, getting unemployed men out of US urban areas. Same thing in Canada.
@MrButtbanger People who are unemployed, in most instances due to banksters causing an economic meltdown, mostly have children to support and they're mostly not strong able bodied young men, and those with dependents couldn't be put in such camps successfully. Government serving as the employer of last resort is vital, and there certainly are a host of worthwhile projects that don't get done by private business because there's no profit in it. There's an effort to broaden the CCC now.
@MrButtbanger They do have this currently. My son is in the California Conservation Corps. He has been since Nov. 2010. He is about to go on a 5.5 month project and will live in the mountains with his crew. No phone, no running water but lots of work. He loves it.
It would be cool if the government offered something like this instead of extended unemployment benefits. There must be worthwhile projects that private business won't touch.
Two of my uncles served with the CCC. Times were desperate, and they answered the call. God Bless my Uncle Mace and Uncle Evan! In a few years...the war broke out, and my three uncles answered the call. By the Lord's good graces, all three returned home safe and sound. Including my father...four Brandons served our nation...with honor. I wish they could bring back a program, like the CCC! Our National Parks and Forests are in desperate need of help maintaining the parks. RESTORE CCC!
Uhhh School sucks.

@Cyallaire
Broaden the CCC? It hasn't existed since 1942... I'd like to see it reinstated first.

My grandfather served with the CCC in Missouri. I wish he were around to share his stories with me.
